Diwali Countdown: Five Weeks of Prep for Your Store

Diwali falls on 8 November this year, and for most Indian shops the five weeks before it are the busiest and most profitable stretch of the calendar. Festive shoppers start browsing early. They compare sweet shops on Google, message boutiques on WhatsApp asking for prices, and decide where to spend based on what they can see and how fast they get an answer.
The shops that win the season are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones that get ready a few weeks in advance, in small steps. This guide lays out a simple five-week plan you can run from your counter, built around two tools you probably already have: your Google Business Profile and the WhatsApp Business app. Most of it costs nothing but a little time.
Week 1: Wake up your Google profile
Start with the shop window that festive customers see first. Your Google Business Profile is free to create, and for a local shop it is often the first thing a new customer checks. Search your shop name on Google to see what appears, claim the profile if it is not claimed yet, and then fix three things.
- Basic details. Make sure the shop name, location pin, phone number and category are accurate. A wrong pin quietly sends festive shoppers to the wrong lane, and they rarely try twice.
- Hours, including the Diwali days. Use Google's special hours feature to show holiday timings without changing your regular schedule. You can set special hours for up to six days in a row, and Google's guidance is to confirm your hours for official holidays even if they are the same as usual, so customers can see that the timings are accurate and current.
- Photos. Photos decide which shop a screen-tapping shopper stops at. Google suggests at least three exterior photos taken from the directions customers approach from, at least three interior photos that truthfully show the atmosphere, and at least three photos of your most popular products, evenly lit. Upload JPG or PNG files between 10 KB and 5 MB; the recommended size is 720 x 720 pixels. Keep them real, because heavily edited images and filters do not make the cut.
Week 2: Set up WhatsApp to handle the rush
Festive weeks flood your phone: customers message at all hours asking the same handful of questions - price, availability, timings, delivery. WhatsApp's guide for small businesses says it plainly: if you do not reply fast, customers move on. The fix is not speed, though. It is setup done before the rush. Do these four things this week.
- Create quick replies for your five most-asked questions. Write down the questions you answer again and again - usually price, availability, timings, delivery and offers - and save a quick reply for each one in the WhatsApp Business app. During the rush, one tap sends the answer.
- Set a greeting message. The automated greeting is the first thing a new customer sees. Welcome them, tell them what to expect, such as "we usually reply within an hour", and point them to your catalog or price list right away.
- Upgrade your away message. Replace the bare "we are closed" with something useful: thank the customer, say when you will reply, and share your price list or catalog link so the conversation keeps moving overnight.
- Batch your replies. Instead of reacting to every ping all day, check in three times - morning, midday and end of day. Three focused rounds are more effective than being glued to notifications while you also run the counter.
Finish by updating your WhatsApp business profile: current hours and festive hours, what you sell, your delivery area and how to order. Customers check the profile before they message, and complete info removes half of the basic questions before they are even asked.
Week 3: Plan your offers and announcements
Now decide what you will actually announce. Pick two or three clear offers you can fulfil comfortably - an early-bird discount, gift combos under a friendly price point such as Rs 500 or Rs 999, or free delivery above a minimum order in your area. Write down the exact dates and the fine print before anything goes public.
Then put the offers on Google. Your Business Profile can carry three types of posts: updates, offers and events. An offer post needs a title, dates and a time, and Google adds a View Offer button automatically; you can also attach a coupon code, a link and your terms. Posts appear in the Updates and Overview tabs on mobile and the From the owner section on desktop, which means a shopper comparing two shops can see your Diwali deal right on your profile.
You can schedule posts to publish at a later time, and even set them to repeat. Use that this week to line up the whole festive calendar: fresh stock arrivals, the offer going live, timings for Diwali week, and the last date to order for delivery.
On WhatsApp, message the customers who opted in to hear from you. WhatsApp's marketing messages are built for exactly this: sharing new products, announcing a deal or a coupon, and making targeted offers to customers who have not visited in a while. Keep it to one or two well-timed messages. Festive inboxes are crowded, and every message should feel like news, not noise.
Week 4: Reviews, stock and delivery details
With two weeks to go, lock the details that decide whether the rush feels smooth or chaotic.
- Reviews. Reply to recent reviews, both the glowing ones and the grumbles, before the season peaks; an owner who answers feedback looks alive and trustworthy. To collect new reviews, share the review link or QR code Google provides and keep it at the counter - but never offer a discount or gift in exchange for a review. Google treats that as fake and misleading content and prohibits it.
- Seasonal answers. Prepare quick replies for the questions the rush always brings: delivery cut-off dates, gift options, returns and exchanges, and whether you can hold an item for a day. Load them before you need them.
- Catalog and hours. Update your product catalog and your hours a week before the big days, and tell customers that reply times may be longer than usual, with a price list or catalog link they can browse themselves.
- Stock and packing. Top up gift wrapping, boxes and covers; make sure your UPI QR code is printed and clearly visible at the counter for the festive footfall; and fix your cut-off date for same-day delivery. Small logistics decided early are what keep festival week calm.
Week 5: Festival week - stay fresh and fast
The final week is about visibility and quick answers. Keep your Google profile fresh with short, frequent posts: today's timings, fresh stock, a reminder when the offer ends. You can edit or delete a post after publishing if details change, so posting daily is safe. If your hours shift from day to day, keep your special hours updated so late-night shoppers know exactly when to visit.
Keep the WhatsApp routines running: away message on during pooja hours, quick replies within reach, and your three reply rounds. Then, once the lamps are lit and the rush winds down, spend ten minutes replying to new reviews, thanking your best customers, and noting which offers and products actually sold. That short list is your head start on next year.
